Renewal Guidelines for Certified Grant Writer® credential

 

Renewal Policy


  • Earn 30 CGW Renewal Credits during the 5-year validity period (or within the one-year grace period immediately following the date of expiration printed on the professional credential) and pay the CGW Renewal fee.
  • CGW Renewal Credits are only awarded by American Grant Writers Association.    
  • The first renewal credential will be issued for a 5-year period of validity. 
  • The second renewal credential will be permanent.

 

Renewal Procedure


To initiate the CGW renewal process, the member submit a Request for Renewal by email.

  • The Request for Renewal will be accepted from 6 months prior to the expiration date of the credential until 12 months after the expiration date of the credential. 
  • Requests for renewal will not be accepted when submitted later than 12 months after the date of validity of the current credential.  
  • Membership in AGWA must be active to renew the CGW credential.
  • Request for Renewal should list the following:  Name, Address, Email, Expiration date on most recent credential, and Renewal Activities.
  • The Renewal Fee for the CGW Credential is $750.00, however, $125.00 will be waived for every year s/he has been a member in AGWA since the CGW Credential was earned or renewed.
  • Payment may be made online on the Marketplace page on our website.

Professional Activities to earn CGW Renewal Credits

Note that all activities must be earned during the validity period of the Certified Grant Writer® crendential, or the one-year grace period.

Grant Management online course

Earn the Certificate of Completion for AGWA's Grant Management Online Course.  Earn 10 CGW Renewal Credits

Present a workshop on Grant Writing, Grant Researching, or Grant Management


Present a Grant Researching, Proposal Writing, or Grant Management Workshop to any organization.  (Note that teaching a course at a university or school is not eligible)

  • The workshop must be at least 2 hours in length. 
  • 5 Renewal Credits per presentation. 
  • May be repeated for a total of 10 Renewal Credits, however the second presentation must be different content.
  • Documentation must be provided at the time of renewal. Acceptable documentation is Promotional Literature or an Agenda prepared by the Organization that is hosting the presentation.  Documentation should provide the Title of Presentation, Presenter Name, Name of Organization Hosting Event, Date of Event, Location and Time of presentation.   

Write an Article for the AGWA Member e-Newsletter

  • Topic must be pre-approved by AGWA. 
  • Article must comply with AGWA article publication guidelines. Articles must be original works with no AI generated information.
  • 2 Renewal Credits per article.  Renewal Credit awarded upon article publication by AGWA
  • May be repeated for a total of 10 Renewal Credit.

Lead Grant Writer or Sole Grant Writer

 

Lead Grant Writer or Sole Grant Writer of a letter, proposal, or application that won a Grant Award.  Note that only competitive grant competitions are eligible.


Foundation or Corporate Grants (competitive)

  • Provide Documentation of Letter, Proposal or Application that was submitted
  • Provide a Letter from the grant applicant signer on Applicant’s letterhead stating that the CGW was the sole grant writer or lead grant writer for this submittal.  Grant must be submitted during the valid period on the CGW credential.
  • Provide Award Documentation from Funder with dates and amount of award.  Minimum grant award eligible for Renewal Credits is $10,000 annually. (Cannot combine several grants to meet $10,000 minimum award) Grant award must be during valid period or grace period on the CGW Credential.
  • 2 Renewal Credits per Grant Award  May be repeated for a total of 10 Renewal Credits.


Government Grant Awards (State or Federal competitive grants)

  • Provide Documentation of grant application that was submitted.
  • Provide a Letter from the grant application signer on the Applicant’s letterhead stating that the CGW was the sole grant writer or lead grant writer for this submittal.  Grant must be submitted during the valid period on the CGW Credential
  • Provide Award Documentation from Funder with dates and amount of award.  Minimum grant award eligible for Renewal Credits is $25,000 annually.  (Several grants cannot be combined to meeting the $25,000 award minimum)  Grant award must be during the valid period or grace period on the CGW Credential.
  • 2 Renewal Credits per Grant Award.  May be repeated for a total of 10 Renewal Credits.

Repeat Certied Grant Writer Exam to earn 30 CGW Renewal Credits

American Grant Writers Association grant conference

The next AGWA Grant Conference is tentatively planned for Summer 2027.

Attend an AGWA Grant Conference

1 Renewal Credit is awarded for attending and documenting each 50-minute session.  Maximum of 15 CGW Renewal Credits per Grant Conference.

Grant Conference Organizer or Co-Organizer

The CGW Organizer is responsible for scheduling speakers, speaker liason, agenda preparation, session documentation forms, and liason with AGWA management.  Earn 15 CGW Renewal Credits per conference.

Conference Emcee

Introduce speakers, operate projector for powerpoint presentations, and distribute session documentation forms.  Earn 5 CGW Renewal Credits per conference.

Present a 50-minute Session at Conference

Presenters:

  • the CGW must be a registered conference attendee,
  • the CGW provides an electronic PowerPoint presentation on a USB drive to the Conference Emcee 5 minutes prior to the session, 
  • the CGW provides a paper handout on the topic to each session attendee 
  • the maximum length of ice-breaker (or fun activities) during the 50-minute session is limited to 3 minutes
  • the maximum length of Q & A is 10 minutes per session
  • 5 Renewal Credits awarded for each presentation

Photographer at Conference

Member Photographer 

  • must be a registered conference attendee,
  • take photograph of each speaker, group shots, and candid shots
  • Provide AGWA with all photos on a USB
  • 5 CGW Renewal Credits per conference
